INTELLIGENT MEASRUING SYSTEM


JINSHANBAO Heating Company Coal Stockpile Inventory Monitoring

This project addressed the coal stockpile inventory measurement needs of Harbin Jinshanbao Heating Company by deploying a high-precision laser scanning system combined with 3D point cloud volume algorithms. The system enables rapid and accurate measurement of complex, irregular coal stockpiles. Multiple monitoring devices collaboratively scan the area and automatically merge point cloud data on a cloud platform, overcoming challenges such as low coal surface reflectivity, large area coverage, and onsite network limitations. Testing demonstrated that the system is easy to operate, highly efficient (10 minutes per scan), and produces stable and reliable results, providing timely and accurate inventory data for daily operations, validating the feasibility and practical value of the solution.

CHANLLENGE

Complex Coal Pile Shapes: Stockpiles up to 10m high with irregular surfaces and large variations, making traditional measurement methods slow and inaccurate.


Low Surface Reflectivity: Coal’s poor reflectivity affects laser distance measurements.


Onsite Environment Constraints: Factory network limitations restrict traditional system deployment, lowering implementation efficiency and increasing cost.


Multi-Device Coordination: Large-area measurement requires multiple devices working simultaneously, posing challenges in data merging and overall volume calculation accuracy.


High Measurement Efficiency Required: Frequent inventory monitoring is necessary for production planning, requiring fast, repeatable measurements.

SOLUTION

High-Precision 3D Laser Scanning: Rotating laser scanners perform full-coverage scans of coal pile surfaces, generating dense and accurate 3D point cloud data.

Point Cloud Volume Calculation: Advanced volume algorithms compute accurate measurements for irregular coal piles.

Multi-Device Collaboration and Point Cloud Registration: The system supports multiple devices scanning simultaneously, with automatic point cloud stitching to ensure continuous and accurate measurements across large areas.

Cloud Deployment: Devices communicate with a cloud server via 4G, eliminating reliance on factory networks and reducing deployment time and cost.

High Efficiency: Each scan is completed in 10 minutes, with an effective scanning radius of ~20m per device at 4m clearance.

Point cloud data accurately reflects coal pile shapes, with sufficient density to support volume calculations; repeated measurements show excellent stability.
